Introduction to the Painter and Exhibition

Harsha Dass

Harsha has been living in Taiwan since July 2020 as a homemaker to her husband, Director General of India-Taipei Association Gourangalal Das, and their two schoolgoing children. Besides conversational Mandarin, Chinese ink painting is a skill that she got exposed to and learnt during her stay in Taiwan, helping expand her artistic canvas beyond oil and mixed media. She also enjoys photography and likes to explore Taiwan's landscape and its arts.

Professionally, Harsha is a senior executive with the Indian Railways responsible for the organization's employees and human resources, and served in India's Ministry of Finance before arriving in Taiwan. She grew up in the Eastern Indian city of Ranchi and studied history at Lady Shri Ram College and Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi. She has worked in Delhi and Kolkata in India, and has lived in Beijing and Washington DC among other cities.

About the exhibition

Introduction to the exhibition content by the creator Mrs. Harsha Dass

My exhibition of Huaniao paintings is an early harvest of my learning as a student of this genre during my three years in Taiwan, and to partially return the love and opportunity given to me by the kind and friendly Taiwanese people.

My discovery of Chinese ink painting was a matter of chance, made possible by the opportunity to meet and train in Taiwan under accomplished artist Jyn-Tzy Wang, who is a living storehouse of lost knowledge and timeless wisdom, embodying and carrying forward a rich legacy of traditional techniques and skills. It is in the guru-shishya tradition of India that I have studied with her, learning from her not just brushstrokes, material and techniques but also imbibing the philosophy behind the art.

The paintings brought together my love for language, history and the arts, giving me immense joy and peace, and serving as a prism through which I will continue to view and project Taiwan to others. As we prepare to bid farewell to this land and its people, they are a personal tribute to you for filling my life with the fragrance of flowers and the chirping of birds.
