(Daoism and Local Cults: Rethinking the Paradigms)國際學術研討會,以及「天之道:道教與地方宗教」主題文獻展。
Daoist on Top, Daoist Alongside, Daoist Absent, or Host on Top?: Reinterpreting Host-Guest Dynamics and the Daoist Liturgical Framework in the jiao (道士在上,道士在旁,道士不在,或主人在上?:重新詮釋「醮」裡的主客變動與道教儀式框架) Adam Yuet CHAU (周越) Communal religious festivals (e.g. temple festivals, the jiao) are best seen as a form of hosting (all kinds of spirits and humans). One of the useful applications of this hosting idiom is to help resolve a debate that arose in the study of the role of Daoist liturgy in communal religious festivals (Dean 1993, 2003; Hymes 2002; Katz 1995; Lagerwey 1987). Scholars who have studied communal festivals in southeastern China (Fujian and Taiwan) (e.g., Dean 1993; Lagerwey 1987; Sangren 1987; Schipper 1974) proposed that Daoist priests and their liturgical framework play a dominant role in structuring the entire festival. The local deities and the sponsoring community itself are put in a subordinate position by the Daoist priests and the Daoist high gods they invite to the scene. Hymes (2002) has teasingly called this perspective the “Daoist-on-top” perspective (i.e., from the Daoist priests’ lofty perspective); meanwhile, he proposed an alternative “Daoist alongside” interpretation. In this paper I will propose a “host-on-top” perspective.
