  Everywhere, collection care has been part of national cultures – until recently. With the new opportunities of the digital age, collections can be duplicated online or even constructed anew in the multinational sphere called the internet. Within the last ten years, Leipzig University Library has put some of its manuscripts online to facilitate better understanding worldwide. It has digitally published and edited its papyri collection, its collection of islamic manuscripts as well as precious items like the codex sinaiticus or the Ebers papyrus. The library treasures are now safer than ever in the vault, while their digital avatars become research material for studies worldwide. In doing this, the library has also helped to redefine cultural memory and its archival support structure.
