  In 2017 the National Library of Australia completed a five-year program which transformed the Library’s digital capability. The Library now has modular and scalable systems for acquiring, managing and delivering our nation’s memory in both born-digital and digitised formats.With this capability in place, the Library stands ready to embark on mass digitisation of its collections, driving exponential gains in research and knowledge.

  The program relied on effective collaboration by Library staff resulting in significant business benefits: clever workflow solutions; scalable digital storage, management and preservation; and, most importantly, dramatic improvements in the public’s ability to discover and use the nation’s documentary heritage – the nation’s memory – in digital form.

  The new systems have transformed digitisation processes. Newspapers, government gazettes, journals, books, maps, music, pictures and manuscripts can be digitised faster and at a greater scale. Users of the Library’s born-digital and digitised collections enjoy elegant and intuitive interfaces that allow them to engage with rich content in ways previously not possible.

  The completion of the program provides the critical infrastructure needed to build our digital library, the nation’s ‘second’ National Library, which will continue to grow in parallel with our extraordinary physical collections.

  As we move towards celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Library building in 2018 we are continuing to innovate and deliver our nation’s memory. Later in 2017 the Library plans to offer discovery and delivery of its entire Web Archive collection through Trove. The Web Archive comprises over 500 terabytes of the whole-of-.au domain harvests which have previously been not available to the public. This initiative will provide full-text searching of the combined archive for the first time through our national discovery service Trove.
