This presentation argues that several of Fujimori’s central claims, in particular the assertion that China did not develop a specialised and independent architectural space dedicated exclusively to tea consumption, had already been articulated more than four centuries earlier by the Jesuit João Rodrigues in his Portuguese work History of the Church in Japan (1622). Notably, despite the chronological distance separating these two authors, both employ the Japanese grass-hut, known as the sōan teahouse, as a conceptual framework for interpreting Chinese tea culture, thereby using the Japanese model as a lens to examine Chinese tea practices and their spatial configurations. Building on this comparison, the present study further develops an architectural analysis of the relationships among tea types, preparation methods, and spatial use in China and Japan. In particular, it examines how differences between powdered tea and infused tea, as well as the contrasting bodily practices associated with table-based consumption versus tatami-seated arrangements, are reflected in spatial organisation. These developments are then contrasted with the chaguan of the late Ming and early Qing periods, as well as with the evolution of modern chayiguan. By integrating late Ming Jesuit sources with modern architectural historiography, this presentation contends that such a comparative approach not only reveals the longue durée interaction between architectural typologies and social practices but also contributes to a deeper historical understanding of the spatial logic underlying Chinese tea culture. 主講人簡介： 日本東京大學建築史博士，現任國家圖書館漢學研究中心獎助學人。曾任臺北中央研究院歷史語言研究所和上海復旦大學文史研究院訪問學者，並在UniCEUB大學（巴西利亞）擔任建築理論與歷史課程的助理教授。其主要研究領域為十六至十九世紀葡萄牙人在東亞地區（日本、中國大陸與澳門）的活動，以及相關建築與文化遺產的保護與詮釋。在東亞人文與社會科學領域的文化、歷史、建築與藝術研究方面發表多篇學術論文與著作，並榮獲2025年度Mori-ASPAC Prize亞洲研究最佳論文獎（Best Paper in Asian Studies）等學術榮譽。其博士論文曾獲2025年度東方基金會——若昂・德・德烏斯・拉莫斯大使獎（Prémio Fundação Oriente - Embaixador João de Deus Ramos），本演講即由該論文修訂而成。 Joanes Rocha holds a PhD in Architectural History from the University of Tokyo and is currently a Research Grant Fellow of the Center for Chinese Studies. He has previously served as a visiting scholar at the Institute of History and Philology, Academia Sinica, in Taipei, and at the National Institute for Advanced Humanistic Studies, Fudan University, in Shanghai. His primary research focuses on the presence of the Portuguese in East Asia between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, with particular attention to architecture and to the preservation and interpretation of cultural heritage. He has published extensively in the fields of East Asian humanities and social sciences, including cultural, historical, architectural, and art historical studies. Sometimes referred to as “eating shit” (食糞) or “eating filth” (食穢) this talk presents accounts of people literally eating feces. It uses a wide selection of Song sources including biji, records of the strange 志怪, medical prescription texts, as well as historical anecdotes preserved in leishu 類書. Taken together, these excerpts form a diverse mosaic of extreme behaviors. In some cases, people demand to eat feces, in others they are forced to consume it against their will, and in others it is administered as a known antidote to poisoning. There appear to be at least three different reasons people consumed human excrement in Song China: coercion, divine retribution, and medicine. The cases presented here reveal a logic of purity in the Song that allowed eating filth to function as a method for healing (an antidote to poison), a coercive punishment, and a symptom of divine retribution. 主講人簡介： Benjamin is a History-East Asia Ph.D. candidate at Columbia University researching the social history of Song (960-1279) China. Broadly defined, his interests include technology, knowledge transmission, and social constructions of waste and disgust. Benjamin uses non-traditional sources like collections of ghost tales and other strange stories alongside technical manuals to investigate historical social change. In earlier work, Benjamin argues that access to key resources like nitrogen salts (saltpeter) and sulfur by multiple states in twelfth- and thirteenth-century East Asia was a primary driver of the invention of explosives (e.g., gunpowder). His current dissertation project, tentatively titled “Putting Waste to Work: Feces and Knowledge in Song (960-1279) China” broadens traditional comparative questions in the history of science (e.g., was saltpeter was made from human and animal excrement and urine in East Asia as it was in Europe?) to historicize human feces as something both useful and repugnant, powerful and dangerous. Documenting the uses and views of human feces in China from 900-1300 AD – a moment of unprecedented population growth, and abundance of new technologies, and a highly commodified society – provides a unique perspective on the accumulation and transmission of practical knowledge about the natural world. Benajmin’s dissertation project reflects his interest in mobilizing social and cultural historical methods to answer questions at the intersection of Chinese studies and histories of knowledge. Before arriving at Columbia, Benjamin completed a BA at Emory University (Atlanta, '15) and an MA (International Studies) at Johns Hopkins University and Nanjing University (Nanjing, '20). He was born in Columbus, Ohio. He regularly joins Contact Improvisation workshops and jams. Throughout the 1930s-1940s, Chinese and international activists sought to incorporate China into a variety of transnational peace and anti-fascist movements or international organizations. This talk focuses on two key non-governmental or semi-official organizations – the International Peace Campaign (IPC) and its China national branch as well as the Chinese League of Nations Union (CLNU). Both groups sought to place China’s confrontation against Japanese aggression at the center of the movement to defend world peace and collective security. Beginning in 1936, Chinese delegates participated in several of the IPC- sponsored international peace conferences in Europe. At the same time, a National Branch of the IPC was established and eventually included over a dozen provincial and municipal committees and more than one million affiliate members. Simultaneously, the CLNU, originally established at the end of WWI, reorganized itself to become a leading advocate of liberal internationalism and collective security which promoted the League of Nations within China and elucidated political affairs in East Asia for an international audience through bilingual publications, hosting foreign visitors, and active participation in international societies. Based on archival materials in China, Taiwan, Europe and the United States as well as conference proceedings and contemporary newspapers and periodicals, this talk argues that beyond state-level interactions, the IPC and the CLNU played an important role promoting internationalism in China while performing public diplomacy for China on the world stage during the Second World War. At the same time, their activities and publications reframed the meaning of peace and internationalism, with ramifications for both China and Taiwan in the post-WWII world. 主講人簡介： 任可，美國麻州聖十字學院（College of the Holy Cross）歷史系副教授，約翰‧霍普金斯大學歷史學博士。現任國家圖書館漢學研究中心獎助學人及中央研究院近代史研究所訪問學人。研究領域涉及近代中國史、中西交流史與外交史、國際史與跨國史、和平史及全球二戰史。最近著作文章收錄於《不穩定的盟友：中美基層關係 (1931-1949)》與《蔣彜和他的文友：旅英華人的文藝創作與社會交往 (1930-1950)》兩部書。並在完成專書《世紀末的外交官：陳季同與十九世紀巴黎的中國表象》。目前正在著手全球二戰時期中國與跨國和平運動及國際主義之研究。 Ke Ren is Associate Professor of History at the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts. He received his Ph.D. in Chinese History from Johns Hopkins University. Currently a Research Grant Fellow of the Center for Chinese Studies, he is also a visiting scholar at the Institute of Modern History, Academia Sinica. His research focuses on modern Chinese history, Sino-Western exchanges and diplomatic history, international and transnational history, peace history and the Global Second World War. His most recent publications appeared in the volumes Uneasy Allies: Sino-American Relations at the Grassroots, 1937-1949 and Chiang Yee and His Circle: Chinese Artistic and Intellectual Life in Britain, 1930-1950. He is currently finishing a monograph titled Fin-de-Siècle Diplomat: Chen Jitong and the Representation of China in Late-Nineteenth Century Paris.
